Saint Augustine, FL: Part Two

I'm going to wrap this up so this is a long post...

Walking up to the Castillo De San Marcos. This was built by the Spanish and then taken over by the British, then back to the Spanish, and then to America! Woohoo! Did you know Florida had like no role in the Civil War? I did not know that. They were basically neutral so a lot of people took refuge there.

Bobby on the walk up.

On the top floor of the fort. Like Fort Macon, this is not a good place for kids! One wrong step and they can fall through a hole in the ground!

These were the soldiers quarters, they slept two to a bed... Yep, two guys in 1 bed. Kinda makes Iraq look not so bad huh??

Pretty view off the top.

Love the auto shoot feature!

The other side.

This is what the fort is built out of (and a lot of stuff in St. Augustine is built of), coquina meaning "little shells". It's basically like cement with shells in it!

After the fort we decided to go to the oldest house, which is.... The oldest house. The González-Alvarez House is the oldest surviving Spanish Colonial dwelling in Florida. The site has been occupied since the 1600s and the present house dates to the early 1700s and it stands there by itself!
This is the kitchen... no granite counter tops here! They hung the shelves like that from the ceiling so the mice and rats couldn't get to the food.

This is a ye olde Brita filter. Basically, you put the dirty water in the top and the limestone (I think) filters all the yuk out and then it drips into the bowl on the bottom. It's pretty hot there so I imagine most people were massively dehydrated waiting for this thing to do its job! Bobby didn't actually drink the water.
After the oldest house we decided to go to the Alligator Farm!

This is an albino alligator. And no, he's not dead. They play dead until some tasty morsel walks by and then they attack!

I thought this place would be kinda lame but actually it was really cool! There were a ton of gators, crocs, birds, snakes, etc etc.

Big gator.

Back of a komodo dragon... he wouldn't turn around!

King cobra snake.

Bobby and some crocodiles.

That's a buzzard on the right, they are like 4ft tall in real life!

This guy wouldn't shut up. He squawked so loud, I don't know how the pirates dealt with it!

Mugger Crocodiles... indigenous to New York City.

Toucan.

This is St. Francis Barracks. It was home to the friars that the Spanish brought with them to promote Catholicism. Then the British soldiers kicked them out and used it for barracks! Woohoo! Now it houses the Florida National Guard.

This is Bobby at O.C. Whites. That was the best restaurant we went to during our trip! So yummy!

On our way to the ghost tour we saw this cool lime tree! I want a lime tree! Bobby offered to get some for me, but there was a fence... if it was chain linked I would have said to climb it!
